Nearly two years of work are coming to a close as I edit the last chapter of the book. Writing throughout the past two winters I’ve put together the story about twenty-five years of traveling to and from Finland. In doing so I’ve gone through my journals, photographs and newspaper clippings and with each chapter I’ve found myself returning to mental images of that time. Its as if, sometimes, the original sequences are playing out before my eyes once again.
This video echos my feelings as I put the finishing touches on the series of events that were such an instrumental part of my life, and remain so to this day. From a summer spent in a rural farm town in Finland – to working in Helsinki fourteen years later – to the all the wonderful occurrences that continue to be a part of my life in Finland. I’ve watched the sun go down so many times from the windows of the planes that carried me to and from while the memories come rushing back. Writing the book has done the same.
The manuscript will be sent off within the next month for the 2008 writing competition sponsored by the local publishing company Rain Farm Press. Excerpts from the book are available at the website which also carries the name of the book, Hakaniemi.
Congratulations Jeff, this is a wonderful accomplishment and such a great story. The new website looks fantastic and I love all of your pictures that you have included. Best of luck with the contest and publishing!
Ooooh. I can’t wait to take some time to read and look at it!!! What a great feat!
You can listen to the “soundtrack”, the background music that played throughout this period on an iMix I’ve created. Clicking the link below will launch iTunes and there you’ll be able to sample the various tracks.
